KBC@ Power Papplu

The baritone is back to enthrall us. Its subservient objective of enriching our dinner or complementing the evening cup of coffee to de stress our daily toxic lifestyle, though in a less than ominous way. For, it comes with a barrage of additions. And Bachchan is definitely tired, physically if not mentally.

Kaun Banega Maha Crorepati, the maha-episode of the season 7 was aired on Sep 6 on Sony Entertainment Television, with the falling rupee and the time of rising inflation, the need for the buck is just apt. Season 7, brings in Rs 7 crores, making it even hotter and richer than ever. So is the viewers expectations and predicament , coupled with  a far more clandestine fear that, this might just be last inning of the Great Bachchan. A sutradhar who started a revolution in the way film stars and audience viewed the small screen never before; popularized television format shows in India, paving way for a huge popularity of this prime time show, to heights even higher than that of the mega-soaps Ramayana and the Mahabharata. His persona and aura is such engulfing in this show that, even SRK, who was brought in as an interim host for a couple of seasons had to struggle to live up to the expectations.        Nevertheless, this aaghaj for the start of the season was very ardent and strong with all media institutions advertising the launch with much fun-fare with various innovative ads. Why not? After all, this season brings in many changes to the format. First, additional Rs 2 crore as the pinnacle prize money; three shots at fastest fingers wherein the participant answering these 3 rapid fire questions in the fastest possible time as a whole(This was good...really kept the excitement buzzing;not sure for the legend though who had to stand up for a longer duration, his exhaustion was palpable); increased no of thresholds; additional seconds for answering the questions and the introduction of 'Power Papplu'! The so called Sanjeevni to rechristen or reincarnating an already lapsed lifeline. Too many goodies. A desperate attempt to kill the monotony. It worked though and Bachchan explained them brilliantly. All said and done, his energy level very commendable. Bachchan sparkled like a twinkling star in the glow of his prowess and the well-designed outfit. His shoes were reminiscent of his sara zamaana song costume of the 80s. He in fact danced to the classic song, behind Sonu Nigam's rendition.

Amidst all these glitters, KBC chose to repeat its last year's stance and communique. Inspiring the middle-class from across the country to sail in the ocean of knowledge and education. Fortune smiled on the first contestant from Haryana who took away a whooping Rs 25 Lack. Kudos!! It was fun to when she called her uncle using the phone a friend option twice(with the help of Power Papplu).

KBC must hold its ground firm. The way it has started, it should do good. Perhaps too many things may spoil the game (Oh God! So much to remember).

Alongside dreaded corridors..

2013 edition of IPL has been so far fantastic. 9 Teams played their best games over the last 45 days and now on Sunday we have the Final at Eden Gardens, where CSK will lock horns with MI...

I am back...

Amidst the plethora of entertainment, a disgraceful malady is now emerging out..again!!...its like the demon in the epic Ramayana, by the name of Kumbhkaran...it sleeps for some months and things becomes as usual, till the time everyone gets back to the groove, then it resurfaces and becomes the malice again..It castes a shadow on the popularity and the credibility of the IPL Franchise...and not to forget, the game of Cricket as a whole.

I am talking about the betting game behind the game of Cricket. The suspected involvement of BCCI supremo N Srinivasan is making it another shameful episode. It also establishes the fact that this illegal trade is spreading like fire, to such levels as one could never imagine..

Players from Indian subcontinent like Shreesanth, who performs an abysmal show on the ground, but his links with bookies is deep routed..Problem is our generation is hungry for quicker bucks and success..this kind of behaviour is an easy prey for the bookies and they pull in players like him on their side. Rather than concentrating on the skills which improves his chances of getting back to the Indian side, he chooses astray..
Sadly, Indian youngsters do not understand this and do not take lessons from the past disgrace of Mohd. Azharuddin, Manoj Prabhakar, Nayan Mongia etc whose career were cut short due to alleged involvement in match fixing..

This then, also brings the question of selection of a player for squads at various levels of cricket. Should talent or fitness be the only criteria? How about test of integrity, character and general behavior? Its a proven  fact that a Great player is distinguished from the good players not only because of sheer talent, but also due to great level of Integrity, professionalism and superb conduct.

Its time, to ponder again...

Boss Ball Game

I hate my boss. Well, everybody does!

I do not like my boss to try and visualize the battle from the coffers of his cabin we fight on the ground and comment “absolutely ridiculous”.

Regardless of my liking, however, a boss will always be boss. Because a sword is hanging over his head too, to be slain at any time if things turn otherwise. Now, these word “things” can have so many meanings. Among others, it is vision. An organizational vision, translated into various Business Units; then into various Divisions and then finally into various Departments.

I work on the support department of a Business Division, where my job is to fulfill a specific requirement. It is one of the links of the entire chain, stands at say position 2 or 3 of the chain. Any bottleneck in my chain will jeopardize the activities of the whole chain & most importantly the end of the chain. At the end of it, standing tall is the King, i.e the Customer.
My department has certain guidelines; the business divisions have their “quarter-end” goals. Between the clash of the guidelines and goals, we strive to achieve equilibrium. The guidelines should not be so rigid that, the goals are adversely affected; or the goals should not be impractical that the guidelines go for a toss.

On a recent assignment, me and my team was to support the business for one of the Projects. The deadline was X number of weeks. If we cannot finish our process within those X number of weeks, the process at the end of the chain suffers resulting in customer dissatisfaction.

To complete our process, we had to undergo some activities at the granular level, which would take Y number of weeks. That would mean we will miss our internal deadline of X weeks for our complete process.

At this juncture, I tried to reach our Boss/team of Managers, for help. In what way we complete our internal activities in less than Y number of weeks so that we can achieve our target of X weeks for the entire process? Our team of Managers had no time. “Don’t involve us in day to day activities, if need be use us for escalations!” that was a reply I received. For me and my team it was need for help/ an escalation, which met with ill-attention from people sitting at the helm.

I decided to tweak in the guidelines; we launched parallel activities, so that we could finish our job on time. We thought we were looking at the bigger picture and hence some flexibility could be excused.

We completed our job on time and the stakeholders and the customer’s satisfaction was intact.

However, at the end of our quarter-end review, with our boss/team of managers, my decision to fully not comply with the guidelines was brought to book. I had my justifications which were termed as ridiculous. I objected saying, I cried for help and no one ever bothered.

My boss grins, “ Mr Z, you were given complete freedom to manage your activities, if we do not participate, that does not mean we were not interested, it means you are expected to do some jobs, without our help. Our intervention does not mean, you are relieved off your duties. You need to be cognizant of that. And not following   the guidelines make you even more dangerous. Guidelines taking Y number of weeks is a standard which must not be avoided. If need be, you should have pushed back to the Project Team and justify.”
I just told my boss, that I was expecting this golden speech, when I was crying for help and not when it is over and I left.

I hate my boss. Does this incident make everyone hate their boss, or make them hate me?

Thumbs up!! The Return of Eklavya...

I am looking above now...I am looking down the very next moment...I see that I rule..But I am made to realise, that my place is in the ashes..If I try to be a Phoenix, my wings will be cut...

I am Eklavya! And I am just about to make fame for myself. I am invincible with my bow and arrow..yet I failed to pierce some apathy from the heart of my Guru Dronacharya..My never-ending devotion to the Art of Archery is now facing a humiliated vindication in the hands of my beloved Guru.

I am asked to pay Gurudakhshina for nothing; I was refused by Guru Dronacharya when I pleaded him to train me in the Art of DHANURVIDYA...a reason which will remain elusive to me..but my devotion for his Great Art still remained within me...I sculptured his statue in the ground I practiced...I looked at his statue and got inspiration...I am a self-made Dhanurdhar...but I pay my all homage to Guru Dronacharya..that if I had not known him, I would not have even think of learning this art of Archery...

I know I am incomplete...I could not learn the sophistication with which Dronacharya's favorite disciple Arjun would hold the bow and shoot an arrow; I did not learn the secret of BRAHMASHTRA....I failed to understand CHAKRABYIUHU and I would never be able to break it....I could not afford a GANDIVA....

But....my beloved Guru has an unspoken fear of me...that I will defeat his most ardent Pupil Arjun in battle...that if I stand up, Arjun would never be crowned with the title of undisputed Lord of Archery...

I failed to comprehend, why can't I be his best disciple? I don't have any aspiration to become a prince of the Kingdom; I don't crave for Wealth and Power; I don't want to demonstrate any supremacy over anyone; All I wanted is to learn the Art of Archery and use it as a self defense...I can vow for NOT to use these weapons of Mass Destruction if required....

My beloved Guru Dronacharya is asking me for Gurudakhshina...that I never use my talents against anyone...no!! he is not contended with this...He wants me to slain my thumb!! Oh my Guru...why do you want me to this? so that it is warranted that I could never shoot an arrow...so that I remain a HERO paralyzed to watch the game being played which I ruled once!!

Now I have to tell him, that do I agree to pay the Guru Dakhshina....I went upto him...Put my eye on his eye..and said, " I am not ready to pay for something I did not learn..." Dronacharya was stunned to a deadly shaking and I continued, " But, as my devotion to you is still intact..I will try to pacify something"...I paused and again looked into his eyes as I continued, " If Arjun can defeat me in a battle of Archery, I will part with my Thumb"...Dronacharya grimaced..Unnerved and humiliated...Agony must be ripping his heart apart; but I wanted to give a complete jolt to his pride and I added, " But if I defeat Arjun, Arjun will have to part with his Thumb"...

Dronacharya fell on the ground..as I have shattered his ego with my arrows...I waited for him to come to his senses.........I shoot an arrow to denounce my guru..(To be continued...)

Will Bodyguard Recover 90 Crores? Thats the Question!!

It is a universal phenomenon that Tsunami wreck havoc in our lives. Well,if you watch Bodyguard you will realise Tsunami Singh did it!!

My question, is when the director already knew that we were going to watch the Bodyguard in the movie, i.e. Salman Khan, why we need a Tsunami...I mean a Tsunami which looked stupid also was a complete disaster.

So if you remove the Tsunami from Bodyguard, it would have been a good movie to enjoy.

Lets first talk about the Bodyguard; as always Salman was impeccable in his charming aura; stunning in his stunts and funny and witty at times. Though he played the tough guy; but his eyes exuberated serene innocence in the entire film. So for die hard fans of Salman, its clear paisa Usool.I loved the scene in the park when Salman put eye to eye to Kareena and expressed his love. Salman proves, he does well in romantic scenes as well.

Theres nothing much to speak about Kareena, except that she excelled in her role. In other words she sleepwalked the role. Shes is the best thing in Body Guard.

The second best thing in Bodyguard is action sequences. It will suddenly bring live to the lifeless script made barren by a lethargic Screenplay.

Third will be the story, which is novel, but the screenplay plays the spoilsport. The climax is though well crafted.

The reason behind the lacklustre screenplay of the movie is the Vision of Director, it came out clearly that Siddique was not sure what mix he wanted in the movie! Does want a Romantic comedy or a Action packed Romance or a Romance-Drama. Lack of clear vision makes his otherwise brevity a spoiled attempt.

I will give Bodyguard a 3-0.2=2.8( 0.2 is deducted because of inclusion of Tsunami Singh in the movie).

Despite this backdrop, the movie has already made 52 crores in 3 days.

Will it recover 90 crore? Unlikely as after Dabaggang and Ready's Success, the expectation of Bodyguard is sky high. Such expectations was clearly not executed in totality by the movie!!

Do we spread butter like Joy!!

Lifestyle is a blessing as well as a bane!!

It is the result of lifestyle that we have the pleasure of living in comforts; or due to less time to live life we take refuge of a Lifestyle...that involves working till late, often dinning out, enormous stress, so on and so forth.

Thats where we fail to spread butter on bread properly; the fear of gaining some pounds keep us grounded; like giant corporations falling prey to paradox of thrift due to a probable slowdown in the economy..Or an agile deer in the jungle stopping its mind for a free Willey in the neighborhood of a tiger.

Spreading butter like joy is becoming extinct. Or perhaps living life has become a myth and leading life in the mechanistic way has taken over.

It is pity we fail to go on a vacation due to hardened project deadlines and hence no leaves from our work; or miss a family wedding or a long awaited ceremony. "Sacrifices needs to be made", as one friend observes, "If you want to give away to the demands of today's life". Typical is the case of a working woman-turned mother, who has to make a choice between "climbing the ladder" and " Giving more time" to the 1 year old boy. Life can be tough; it demands much more than one can imagine.

So we resort to innovative ways of balancing life-work; but in that fashion, we neither remain loyal to work nor we justify our ways of living life. Because by doing so, we just accomplish everything like a job or a project, but do we derive pleasure out of it? Or in other words, do we enjoy eating a brown bread, without butter? Do we spread butter like Joy?

I have some friends though, who have charted for them a path that gives them the satisfaction of living life. One of them quit a high paying MNC job and started blogging. "The huge pressures of job did not allow me to travel", says the friend who started a taking up a course in wild life photography. After the course, he goes travelling to places he has never seen before, does photography and runs his blog. "And the best part is", he remarks " I live my life!".

One of this friend i know was into Film-Editing and Media. He quit and launched a music album. The album did average, but what he wanted to achieve in life was achieved; "Working on the album helped me meeting many new people, studying, travelling and much more, which would not have been possible with a regular job".

It is one's utmost desire to live life that can only translate the wish to do it. People need to undergo the risk of success; choosing an alternative career option does not guarantee success. It is upto those taking the plunge, needs to decide what they want out of life.

And deciding to spread butter like joy is not easy at all.

I am still trying to decide and yet to reach a decision;-)

Not All Great Ideas Come from IIM-A!!

So Harsha Bhogle carved a niche for him in the Sporting Commentary arena, despite being a successful alumnus of IIM-A. Or a Chetan Bhagat becoming a successful Author in recent times of the masses( Of course, whether he belong to the classes, is doubtful). Thats uber cool by design and of course a stroke of destiny. Albeit such facts though, they deserve an applaud(or you may consider giving an apple applause) for taking the unconventional route where people less travel by!!

But how many great creations or ideas comes out IIM-A or an IIT Delhi(Without challenging the sanctity and credibility of the Glorious Institutions of Indian Academia); despite paying high homage and giving creme-De-la-creme stature to these institutions that creates High profile bright minds in the country, we however do not see great ideas created by the beneficiaries of such excellent education. And thats, in my view is abysmally sad!!

When we see, innovation in recent times by an Indian entrepreneur, we generally talk about Tata Nano or how Future Group changing the retail space in India!! I am sorry but we have examples, few and far between (though Bollywood may consider prying for Including Aamir Khan, who emerges as an intellect, atleast trying to make some experiments on the way the films are made and promoted).

Now consider the education of these people; Ratan Tata who had a degree in Architecture from Cornell University and finally, and I believe for the heck of it he got a Management Degree from Harvard Business School. His entire life revolved around changing the Indian Automobile arena and in fact under his leadership, Tatas rejuvenated Jaguar and Land Rover.

Look at Kishore Biyani, the brain behind the super brand "Big Bazar" and the one that revolutionized Indian retail space has just got a Bachelor degree from HR College of Commerce, Bombay. No IIT no IIM.

Even the illustrious MR NarayanMurthy, who pioneered Infosys did his engineering from National Institute of Eng, University of Mysore(though later on he did his masters from IIT Kanpur).

Or, the man who reengineered BPO in India, Mr Pramod Bhasin, had a Bachelor Degree in Commerce from Delhi University and a CA qualification.

There will be many examples (yes Bombay Dubbawallas; where did they get education from? IIM..Na!! IIT...NAH..:p) of people coming up with great Ideas, and not having a high-flying education from the creams.

Reasons can be many; I believe an IIM or an IIT can teach technicals/or systems and procedures..but very less emphasis is being laid upon thinking beyond those systems or thinking out of box as one popularly says. Or in other words, the capacity to think can never be trained; it remains in the minds of the person. I wonder when IIM/IIT will stimulate an alumnus to dream!!

Globally(well I dont want to speak here more, we have enough examples), if we take the case of just retired CEO Steve Jobs; we will be surprised how much he had created and how little formal education he had. He dropped out of Reed College and for a living he used to return coke bottles for money and got weekly free meals from Local Hare Krishna Temple!!

Surely, creation of an IPAD does not require magnificent education, but requires boundless thinking and dreams channelized into workable solutions.

I remember one of my friend commenting about the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 as" Arrey, saare employees IIM or Harvard se Uthaoge toh company dubegaahi! If everyone makes strategy, kaam kaun kadega?"

Jokes apart..we will eagerly wait a great idea that comes out of the brain of an IITian/IIMian!!

R&D.....Will Bollywood ever Bother?

This came to my mind, when I had heard a story about a thief; that how carefully did his necessary fact finding about a neighborhood; about its populace; their behavior, their activities and most importantly how many families keep more cash and ornaments at home and goes dining out in the night, keeping thy home deserted with minimal protection, forget about insurance against Burglary; and after all his facts on board, the thief will circle up the house nos that comes up as the potential targets..Well, he ventures out a successful ambush and runs Scot-free, at-least till the time he enjoys his new found possession!!

I wonder, if ever Bollywood learn from this incident; today, the biggest Film Industry in the world with one of the most talented ensemble of great Stars, Directors,Composers, Writers, Choreographers, and whole host of technology available; all you will here: "Karan Johar remaking Agnipath"...xyz remaking "Khel Khel Main"..Farhan Akhtar not content with the remake of Don, making "Don 2"......Phew..

Come on...When will Bollywood MAKE movies...

Bollywood is running out of ideas...Not only movie-makers, but composers as well; Pritam in Once upon a time in Mumbai with " Duniya main" and worse still, turning the golden "Dum Maro Dum" in a piece of garbage is what the result of dying out of ideas. Or the Latest "Oye Oye" in Dhamaal 2..Even 'Jalebi Bi' looked superior to it!!

This is heartening; because Bollywood has great muscle and prowess to invest in Research, either for a Great script or a great Song; but they won't do it. They would like to race ahead of time. Or Perhaps, everyone wants to play safe; the fear of failure or to potential loss in the box office collections!!

For example, excel entertainment which made "Luck by Chance", "Lakshya or a "Kartik Calling Kartik", which were closely original scirpts(though could have distant semblance to oldies) could not set the box office on fire. Though these were great scripts with superb direction and memorable music, since they failed to create any magic in the minds of viewers, they decided to turn the easy way out..ZINDEGI NA MILEGI DOBARA..its a clear and unambiguous charter of the continuation of earlier Box office Hero DIL CHAHTA HAIN..and the result, the movie is a Blockbuster now.

Karan Johar for example, made a bold attempt "Kabhie alvida Na Kehna" and it was a box office dud. Then he decided to ride on the wave of the 9*11 rampage and made "My Name is Khan"..and became somewhat successful.

Some laudable attempts went bizarre in box-office. One of them is "Patiala House", which was supposed to be based on ace English spin wizard Monty Panesar. It had everything, great star-cast, great music and a good biography inspired story. But it was blamed due to loose screenplay and Akshay's eroding fortunes in recent times.

"Udaan" walked away with many awards; but the biggest award, that of the box office haunted it. Some of the movie-goers did not even know when it came and went.

Now, let's talk about someone who "thinks' that he really does R&D for stories and screenplays. Mr Aamir Khan, the self-proclaimed perfectionist. For starters, "Ghulam" was a commendable effort; followed by ultra-fast "Sarfarosh"..then "Lagaan" as they say, rest is history. Aamir Khan's attempts at history is not all high all the time. For example, "Mangal Pandey", the actor took close to 3 years to come up with the epic saga, but it bombed in box office like a balloon. But this was a great effort that viewers gave least attention too.

But shocking for a man who can recreate a Mangal Pandey, how can he create a D.K.Bose? No matter how much Aamir presses about his diversity and versality, but I would deeply condone it as an attempt at cheap publicity and way of attracting the youth.

When a doyen of the industry takes the short cut to success, what can one expect from others?

Well, not entirely correct that statement is!! SJB....one director/producer who can be still seen an act Original..Guzarish was a fantastic attempt or a bold attempt in recent times..but people did not care much.

The why does Bollywood, not care for what viewers like; as in the case of a FMCG or a consumer durable or a Pharmaceutical company invests half of their wealth in R&D and consumer research.

Bollywood has the muscle..All its need the will.

Then only we hope, we will see more of "A wednesday" or a "Raincoat" or "No one killed Jessica"or a "TZP"

Till then we are waiting to see some changes. Or someone needs to become an Anna Hazare and come to a fast to make Bollywood think seriously about making "Original" Movies.

Freedom: Is it always great?

Irrespective of its good or bad, we want it. Everyone wants to break free, the Queen way!

A teen who is debarred from entering a bar till hes/shes 18, or a director who's movie is banned from screening due to some controversy; everyone wants to feel the fresh air.

Consider the case of a ruling party: it acts its own whims and fancies. No matter how far it cross the realm of corruption, let alone the country go hay wire in all aspects of life. Such freedom creates the so called Anna, the modern Gandhi to resist such freedom. It is however remains to see, how far the freedom given to such Anna's to stall, is effective.

Freedom of expression: the worst case scenario, this is I would call CREATIVITY by opportunity...we got a BHAG D K Bose. Why can't we get a Subhash Chandra Bose with " Give me blood, I will get give you freedom"?

The areas where we really need Freedom or in other words Innovation, we will always lag behind: Steve Jobs will create the IPhone 4 and we will just buy it. Larry page will devise Google and we will just search it.

Freedom must be replaced by Responsible Freedom Immediately.

That's should be the resolve of 64th Independence day.

The Roman Settlement!!

I wanted to have the last laugh, but it is always fortune that smiles. I believed in destiny, but the question was if destiny believed in me?

I was reeling under serious thoughts while I was waiting for my turn for a meeting with the public relations manager of ASTHETICS,the famous youth magazine. This was in connection with the launch of my collection of songs DUPORHEA. I wanted a coverage by the magazine during and post launch of my album.

' Impressive', I never realised when I was called in and it took me some time to come to terms of the fact that I already briefed about my agenda to the PR Manager who gave that response to my quandary. After giving a welcome gaze to the lady in front of me with long hair, dark eyes and a mysterious smile I wanted to return the same word, but I summoned all my excitement to a composed thanks to her.

' It looks like the album is about romantic songs!' More than enquiry it appeared to be statement she deduced. I was enticed to elaborate then.

'Perhaps you got carried away by the mention of Rhea' I just sipped the warm coffee offered to me when I noticed her eyes showed glimpses of curiosity. I continued again, ' It is close to breaking the stereo-type, yet it is very common! It is far from popular verse yet it is the symbol of your neighbourhood. It is a novel concept but arouses everyday regularity' I was non stop.

'But what is the significance of DupoRhea?' She did not seem to be convinced and bending towards me she posed this question.

I looked at her desk and the tiny dashboard she maintained. There were few pictures of great people, arranged in a peculiar manner which I failed to comprehend. In one of the pictures Vladimir Putin was depicted shaking hands with Jawaharlal Nehru!

I asked her what made her morfed a Putin in the realms of a Nehru. And I myself replied to her that it is an example of DupoRhea. Aligning past to the present.

The more than irregular conversation concluded in her assuring him of taking my plea to the VP Communications.

I was happy about the outcome of the visit. The informal conversation with the PRM was fruitful too. It was true that my excitement was fully linked to the release of my new album over the last six months, but meeting with the PRM prompted me to shift a gear! Kimaya Baruah. At length I decided to google the meaning in web, it means pious. Now I am biased towards this pious girl. Is it a reward for a dream that I have launched some months ago? Or this is just a break from the dream!

Suddenly I drew a similarity between myself and sage Vishwamitra. Both had a mission to pursue; both encountered oomph of beauties during their mission. While his thinking was on, track 3 of the album was being played on his system........ SONGHATOR SONDHIYA DEKHA PUA ROMOK JOMOKOR MAJOT DHUSOR PORINOTI E PUAR DUKMUKALIK SUORI OSINAKI RENDEZVOUS KHELE!

In the meanwhile the day of my album launch finally arrived.

'Still no news of the coverage came', I almost disdained it as a futile excercise. But the curiosity inside me was never settled and I dialled her cell,' Is this Sagorika?' I tried to be sure. There was a pause and then came the reply ' I know why you have called!' she giggled and continued ' In fact I am at the venue with my colleague to cover your opening. So relax now!'

I saw her from a distance; more than her colleague she seems to have brought in her elegance. At length after the launch I approached her and thanked her for arranging all this.

' Don't thank me' she gave a careless smile and looking at her left said' This Reema who has arranged everything. The day I met you was my last day at ASTHETCS. I briefed her about the project and she handled everything.' While I acknowledged the help of Reema, my eyes were looking for my clarifications. Understanding my anxiety she chiped in again ' Reema is new and that's why I accompanied her for this event and wanted to wish you.'

I watched them leave.

My fulfilment was shallow and ended in a surprise.

Its Dhinka Chika!!

This is after 40 Minutes after I have watched the Salman Khan Starer Ready.

The title of this blog is my conclusion to it; and the fact that I can't help forgetting the song; and for many unpopular reasons!!

Firstly, why the name of the bus on the top of which Salman embarks upon is called "Dhinka Chika"? and most importantly, one house on the street has many colours on the wall; pink, yellow, blue, red..u name it and u will have it. Finally, while dancing the dresses of his co dancers changes after every step while Salman remains the same, like his fortunes!!

In short it was Dhinka Chika personified.

It makes sense to make a formula masala movie; its a make believe game; they make it and we believe it. The reason why a movie is being made is to provide entertainment; well I must say, Ready is a wholesome entertainer; however it will be horribly incorrect to compare with it Dabbang or setting the expectation that it will set your hearts fire like Dabbang.

Having said that, it is again worthwhile to mention that the movie rides on the Charisma of Salman; all co stars are good, but as long as Salman is there in the scene; so Salman is the soul of the movie.

I have one thing to mention here; Asin has a good comic timing, but with Salman-Asin pairing is however not rocking. With a few minutes presence in Character Dheela, Zarine Khan seems to be a better co-star with Salman.

Other than Salman, Mahesh Manjrekar's presence was good but his forgetting the "woh" was little overboard. Paresh Rawal is I believe wasted once again. And I dont know why Aryan Babbar is READY to look foolish once again After TMK.

The strength of the movie is the dialogues and the way comedy is infused in the situations which were at times pretty repetitive. I could find a close semblance to David Dhawan-Govinda type movies like Aunty No 1, Akhiyon se Goli Maare etc films.

After a rigorous week of slogging, ready will surely make you forget your pain. Good job Sallu Miyan!!

Core Competency: Are we forgetting?

In my childhood I read a poem about a couple; the poem narrated a story. It was like, husband worked in his farm and the wife was a homemaker; everything one going fine, until one day they started arguing about, who was better? The husband with his part of job or the wife, or in her part of responsibilities? The wife said, "Lets swap the job responsibilities; you take care of home and i will do farming; for one week.Lets see who fares better?"

As per plan, they started with the role reversal; everything was going except for the fact that in crucial moments; like when the child needed the mothers feed and motherly care; or the food that required the technical acumen from the cook was missing with the husband. Similarly, the wife could not work with the machines properly and crashed it. In short they both screwed up in their alternate jobs.

Moral of the story: People should work based on their core competency.

Examples: Commercial Banks entering Investment Banking which was not their core competency; which led to sub prime debacle in US and Europe; in Indian case, Mahesh Manjreker, the quintessential director of Vastav, Kurukshetra spoiled his directorial acumen by started acting; Anna Kournikova, now is neither a tennis star nor a good model, she was better of playing Lawn tennis; so on and so forth.

Latest in the fag is our Union Home Minister P.C. True that he is a responsible politician. But as it turned out during his stint as Home Minister, our country had faced blows one by one, recent one being the security goof up with most wanted names.

At least had he been in his favorite role as the Finance Minister, our country would have done better in economic issues like the inflation etc.

PC. think again...Think your core and then compete..

Dial M 4 Motivation!!

Thinking that trees need any motivation to produce some gentle wind is beyond logic; but if one looks at a different angle; its a job of a tree, isn't it! apart from giving shades and keeping it green. Well no one bashes a tree for not doing its job well. Then why your boss invites you to his cabin and hits you left, right and center for not completing a project in time!!

Fact is everyone needs motivation. From a living object say a Tiger to hunt to a stationary one like the Sun. But getting that splurge of energy is not only in limited quantity, but it has a subversive nature; it measures your efforts and then thwarts them. Example: you at times fail to decide, that your inability to have muesli is lethargy or an attempt at new found rhythm for economy. Regardless of either one, you miss that tinge of the M-factor and end up just having water in breakfast. A negative energy creeps in.

So I draw some conclusion here; a fastidious but well-known outcome!! That is through the hope of realization of a goal(in the example either to attain economy or to be more lethargic, I did not opt for Muesli, a negative motivation though), motivation kicks in. Even the Freudian Psychoanalytic Theory propounds the same.

During our school/college days we studied hard to score good grades; we wake up early so that we do not miss the school bus or the office deadline of reaching on time; we run on the treadmill to lose some pounds; we avoid smoking so as to we keep the promise to our loved ones; to achieve all these, we resort to some kind motivation.

Sometimes however, one fact to be borne in mind; do we consider the pressure to achieve something as motivation? Most of the times we do. We stay at office till late as we have to meet the client deadline; the soccer star practices hard as he is going through a lull season so far; so on and so forth.

Perhaps a thinline can be drawn between what constitute pressure and what makes up for motivation!! When you happily take the pain to achieve something, thats when Motivation is calling the shots; otherwise, pressure is surmounting.

Why do we need no motivation to drink if we like it? Its a question a Psychologist will like to answer better; to do something bad, we do not need motivation, is it really true. Or we lose our mental balance to think through; Is it a rage to hit someone badly because of a fight or a motivation to demean the other? Very tough proposition indeed.

Life is a victory for those who can churn out positive energy and channelize into proper use.

Out of my Writing closet...A vintage one...Part 1!!

I want to start with a word of thanks to Sandeep for introducing me to this special possession. I am talking about the HBO Original Series, Sex and the City!! I want to recollect some golden moments of it which I enjoyed very much!!

First time when I heard this tune playing in the series at the start of a fresh episode, it caught my attention. For a moment, it surmounted the memory of my party days, with the playing of the “Smoke on the water” by Deep Purple. For me, it was a melodious retreat of “Smoke…….”…..

Well, that was the start. I got to know about a series, by the name of the “Sex and the city”, which was aired on HBO. I do not however remember now, when I captured my initial rendezvous with the series. Sadly, I could not follow the series in television.

Two years ago in 2008, the series (or its aftermath to be precise) was made into a movie, by the same name. I planned, and decided that I should not miss this opportunity of watching the movie, which could generate rave applauds worldwide. I booked the tickets for the movie, with some of my colleagues. As ill luck would have it, we could reach the theatre only past the interval. Hence, it became another futile exercise of attempting to catch the grapevine surrounding the movie. The only enticing moment which I could follow, was the brilliant reproduction of the love letter penned down by Ludwig Van Beethoven, when Carry, one of the lead in the movie, recited in her most delirious panache.

A few months back, around January 2010, during a break from work, I and Sandeep were strolling round the office outskirts. It was an evening, with a cool breeze blown air to air, complemented by a year warming hair ticklish drizzle. Nature made no less effort to give a silver lining to the now infamous Cybercity. The presence of the many companies like Microsoft, Sapient, Canon, KPMG, PwC, GE and their name tags in the most luminous way made the place look like heaven. Subsequent to that, the amazing structures of the buildings, accommodating those corporate houses were used by the advertisers to promote larger than life static commercials. These include Ray Ban, Aircel, and Blender’s Pride etc.

While we were looking at the newly transforming commercial landscape of Gurgaon with an enraptured vision, Sandeep observed that this place was gradually developing into Times Square of New York. I couldn’t but agree to his observation. The engulfing emergence of these modern day decoration on the buildings, roads and everywhere presented to us a suedo New York, to us. Talking about New York, we discovered the tidbits about the city in the heart of its presentments, in terms of the 24*7 lively atmosphere, the NYPD, the night life, the statue of liberty, the Wall Street and the NYSE, Starbucks, Brooklyn bridge and of course Manhattan.

“When I went to New York, I went to the Liberty and visited Times Square. That was just a day long affair. But to feel New York, you need to spend some good time there”, I remember saying that to Sandeep. “I sometime wonder, if there is any book or a movie or anything which can display the essence of the city!”

Sandeep took no time to advise me to watch Sex and the City, the series.

It was an all encompassing 6 seasons; it is difficult to decide where to start when I start talking about it. Be it the storyline; the cast and the character; the amazing screenplay; the direction, I mean the spontaneity which each of the characters evolve; the inscrutable ability of the series to make the audience feel at home and with the progress of the series, the viewers live the story. That’s what makes the success story so enumerable. The viewers will try to guess; for example, in my case I had had a liking to the character of Steve, Miranda Hobbs’ husband. Their relationship had enough of twists and turns; at one point I assumed that the “TiVo” supersedes Stevo and Miranda would have no regrets about it. That was when the miraculous twist happened. And times I want to question the story tellers, “1. How can you make an audience believe, Miranda discovers that she loves Steve after their baby celebrates his first birthday and at a time when she is in head over hills in a relationship with her neighbor? 2. Miranda finally marries Steve, at a time she knew she was well settled in her life, without her ex?”

Well, the answer to these sabbatical questions lie in watching the series and believing that there is a great pride in thinking differently. The makers must have believed in this philosophy throughout as it is quite gratifying to know that the spirit of the series was not dampened, even after running for over a decade. The series evolved well with the varying tides of ages.

To be continued............

A love letter to an Anonymous!!

human wants never cease to exhaust...i know even if God gifts me the chance to talk to u for 24 consecutive hours, perhaps i will still ask him," Almighty, can't we have 26 hours a day!!!"
we lie...i say i cant live without u..its a blatant misstatement...see..u are not here...but m not starving..i take my lunch and dinner regularly...yeah, of course the taste is not as good as the one, had it been taken in your presence..in a way I love my stomach more than you and hence u can see i am growing with a semi-circular tummy..
the breeze tonight was very quiet,,making me forget an otherwise tough day..accelerating temperature and incessant mood of the supervisor...to top it all, the tea cup i lifted to sip was far from being a warmcandy..i love tea...i find it hard to even imagine that tea and me will ever separate, even though for many bad reasons, it needs to be quit, so much so that u quit smoking..smoking..m not even a starter...i just pass the 80% white and 20% brown stick to my friends coz they find me oblivious and remark, " how do u relax man?"...hey but i know there is someone who will be happy if i dont start a career in smoking!!!
this is however in no way to mean that my decisions are based on your whims and fancies!! After all, you would agree too that I, under the normal circumstances would lead a life based on what I want..sometimes there lies the problem!! I say, ' I need to love you"..and here I had to compromise because I must pay heed to your dictat," u must not love me too much"...so, I simply love you and let me tell you that the percentage has reduced dramatically, to the only fact that, "u r my life"..
i was talking abt the breeze outside..it resembled to your hair dancing ballet with the moon..hey have i sometimes told you u r better off the moon? yes, I remember you didnt quite agree to this proposition..i know it was exaggerated...when someone is blind in love, he would not have seen you and would have compared you to the moon..I am not blind and hence think beyond the moon...
after mumtaz mahal deserted his life, Shahjahan conceptualised the Taj..it is one of the modern wonders of the world...But I know, your departure from my life can never be replaced by any great monument or obsession...so in your memory I have no plans to build or arrange for wonders...
sometimes, I become too romantic...my sister in law often remarks to me, " I have seen very few people as romantic as you", this was a complement, I however do not take..because being romantic is being full of life and without you I am half a life!!
you are not like a typical someone..you have traits of a mighty soul u know...u r very strong at heart!! perhaps thats why I find strength in you..no matter where you are and in whichever form you exist, you kind of tell me, " Hey m there, carry on with life"...drawing some guts from you, I would also like to add that consider me as a part of your journey!! I would like to share it in whatever small way it may become...i am glad that u consider me worthy of talking to me sometimes and make me part of your life!!
u would perhaps never realise what you have gifted me with!! A desire to express myself in a manner which is unique!! I know I am ages behind the time, when i will be called a writer, but because of you I have started chasing this dream!!! how this happend? I used to send you those short messags and no matter how trivial were those, you tend to read and appreciate those...it gave me a lot of encouragement to write!!! Once I got a gift voucher of Rs 1100 from The Economic Times for writing a punchline for one of their advertisements...and because of you I took up the pen as a Copywriter, atleast for a small occassion...
Oh! I am sorry, I forgot to ask how are u? in my excitement for talking abt myself, I almost forgot that I am ignoring someone who means so much to me..I know u must be doing exceptionally good in your job...the best part of you is that u give 100% in whatever task you do...see, I do not appreaciate the use of only brains in work, sometimes it is necessary to give your heart out..and m sure you do that...
I really wish I get a chance to dance with you...I am not a good dancer and like all bad dancers wish for a chance with davar, I really wish one day we are shaking a leg together..and you showing me tips to place the steps with the rhythm say silently, " lets go for walk"...
hey....since we are going for a walk now...we will talk while we walk...bye...

Perspectives and the Jungle in the Rain!!

There is a question that bothers me;
Being away from nature makes you forget it
Or bring you more closer to it?

Sometimes it feels the rain drops,
Unexpected during the Spring,
Really does not bring to you Joy any more
As you are more fragile to the dirt on the street
Than attracted to the touch of the heavens.

It is a question of choice;
A difficult one between a complain
And a desire to accept the things
The way they are;
Or you take simplicity to be repetitive;
And the maze to be the order of the day.

In short, you welcome perplexity with open arms
That shot of ambiguity lies so flat in your system;
Still you do not care!!

My beloved said, lets quit our jobs
And start a new business;
To cater to the ideas unexplored.
Never did we thought that we
will be slaves to the demands of discipline
And never alter the fact that
Behind all great ideas
We keep praying for the extra dollars!!

That is when, we fail to prefer to acceptance
And choose to complain;
The need to go beyond the circle of life decays!!

Consider crossing a signal on the road.
The urge for a quiet halt and then speeding up
When it is green is lost thousand years ago.
We race against time and kill the beautiful time.

A rain in the Jungle is so beautiful
And we all dismantle this fact.
We have come far away from the rain,
And we do not want to go back.

Fevikol..

A few days ago, Madhyam found that his credit card has been sliced into two pieces of equivalent measurement; one piece with the card details and the other piece with the magnetic tape and signature. It so happened when the vendor swiped the card at Barista that it fell apart. Madhyam was not mad. He was just amazed by the separation. Like a husband being divorced with the wife; like two inseparable friends falling apart; like a magician being deprived of the wand.

Madhyam wondered there must be some adhesive that glues in those relationships. Once it dries up, things start to roll down the court. It is almost impractical to regress the adherence. Relationships apart, he decided that the card can be taken care of. He found an adhesive in the market and did the fixing. His card was adjoined and more importantly, it became functional as well.

So while he was on his way to Guwahati, he made a call to PVR cinema for a reservation to the show of Taare Zamen Par. He did not want to take any chances. He wanted to watch the movie the day he would reach Delhi. While making the reservation for the show, he was asked to furnish the card details. That is when he discerned the card, revamped with the adhesive’s glow.

By that time the bus reached Tarajan. Madhyam’s eye started to flicker in delight at the sight of her. He knew that Ajori was boarding the same bus as his. That was a result of his little chit chat with her over the mobile the other day. He was certain; he would never like to see the end of this bus journey. He observed her. Next to her seat was a man who would not mind swapping seats! That was a cry out from his heart. But those were the few days; he was not listening to his heart. And the substance of mind was oblivious of such deductions. So he kept quiet. He sent a message to her mobile, ‘we are on the same bus, regards: Madhyam’.

After about 15 minutes, a message came back. “I know”. Madhyam could never figure out if she replied late or there was a problem of the network. But he could well figure out something; the moments of anxiety were still there. Ideally, by now her replying late should not make him anxious. But he could sense the loosening of grips.

“Do I still love her or, these are expressions of a mind who wants a change? “, he was obviously never looking for an answer. He was just hoping for a chanced encounter now that lasts at least for some time. A time that is needed to nip a cup of warm tea while speaking about the feelings of happiness to see her. Madhyam never had the chance to realize the meaning of the word spectacular practically. He was hoping talking to her and spending some time with her will be ostensibly spectacular.

The messaging thing continued as when he made a call to her, the voices were indistinct. But his purpose was not solved. While during the call, he could still hear her voice, whereas a message would take more than a distance of 10 kilometers by the speed of the bus before it actually reached him. Those disconnected calls and missing messages were the numbers on the dashboard. He pictured a blurred image of the future. In a newly developed suburb, inside the non-monolithic panorama of a coffee house, among the few coffee loving fellas, aside the house of a 360 degree view of the street and the visiting passers-by; Madhyam was busy engaging a customer satisfaction activity as the owner of the coffee house. He was engaging the patrons to fill up the feedback form. A lady in her late twenties captured his attention. She was in her denim and a jacket which gave her the look of a college girl. But there was this grit of her eyes, lashed in sparkle and the solid command of the way she handled a phone call over some “copyright” issues, she was definitely in a mission. She resembled to Ajori; except for the accent and the fact that she had firangi cheeks and chin.

“Well gentleman, I have only adhered to the pre agreed conditions that also stipulates that the online print of my book will have separate copyright resolutions. I understand your situation, but I am as good as the conditions which have been laid out. Now if we end on this note of congeniality, I can focus on the reprisal agreement. “, she hung up while she was completing the feedback form. Madhyam gave a gaze, trying to join some missing pieces,” Excuse me madam, you forgot to put up your name and signature”, he asked her.

“Hmm. Do you want my name or the feedback?”

“Ideally both”

“Ideally I should be served coffee for free, but the age of idealism is over”

Listening to her stark reaction, Madhyam gave her a smile and expressed,” Mam, looks like you are preoccupied with something, so never mind. Your feedback was what I was looking for; putting your personal details is optional”, without waiting for any response from her, he continued” But I want to assure you, you will not be contacted for any business. Thank you for your response”

This was the image he had in his mind. Madhyam will figure her out in future when they meet, but either he will not be too sure or he will keep the communication to the minimum. Ajori will not recognize him or even if she does she will act like a stranger to him.

In the meantime, he received another message from her, “What are you doing?”

After a putting a thought, he replied, “Sleeping”

To the reply of that message he received the one that read, “I thought you carry books with you”

“Apparently, I have got something in my sleep more interesting than those books, so “.

There was no reply. The bus halted for a break, on the highway aside the crest of a beautiful tea estate. This halt was for the passengers to release their nature’s call and sometimes as quinsy as casual smoking. So Madhyam decided it will not be a bad idea to stretch his legs and pass by the glance of the beauty on board.

“I forgot that the thing I found in my sleep is right before me, alive and smiling”, Madhyam passed the note to Ajori’s mobile while getting off the bus.

After a few minutes when he did not receive any reply from her, the image of the future he painted a few minutes back has started haunting. They have already started behaving like perfect strangers. Or the adhesive he was contemplating was starting to become extinct. He was not much excited to talk to her as she seems to be enjoying her own cocoon.

“One hell of a smoke”, Madhyam was an amateur smoker. Rather he was a tea/coffee guy. He was very enthused by the phrase “end in smoke”, that’s why he tried smoking sometimes. Funnily he thinks it would have been better had he tried to learn the phrase some other way. This way, he neither learnt it, nor became a smoker that any one would notice. Stepping up to the cabin, he was thinking of ways to avoid looking at her. Fortunately for him, she was asleep when he crossed the aisle. While she was sleeping, her co passenger was leaning towards her in almost a 45 degree slanting which the latter was unaware of. For a moment, Madhyam became jealous of that passenger. “I have known her for almost 8 years now and I have not sat together with her for even an hour. The curves and moves which he is exuberating now, never even occurred to me in my dreams”. With the abrupt course of the moments in the aisle, in which Madhyam was not even a means to the end, he slogged back to his seat.

The bus was accelerating after the momentary break. It was a bright sunny day after two days of continuous rain fall and the greenery of the passing woods and the tea gardens was lightened to perfection. However, the speed of bus and the resultant whim-wham acted as a deterrent to Madhyam’s indulgence. He has this habit of swallowing things at a slow pace, whether its food or beauty of the nature. If it were possible, he would have touched each leaf of the tea plants and hold it for a while and then feel its aroma in the calm sliding by his cheeks.” Why should we consummate things at a pace? Why accomplishing things as fast as it could is given such a huge importance in life? Why is the need for this rush? What is the use of reaching the destination and ending the journey?” This questions had been haunting Madhyam all these times. He had been the victim of the urge for accomplishments himself. “If I had not bugged her for an answer, we would have still been enjoying the journey together”, he was trying to find an answer to his quandary.

Everyone wants to be sure. So did Madhyam. But his anxiety to become sure came to pass later than he or she expected. In fact Madhyam was hugely unsure of his desired result. This could have been the underlying reason for his unwillingness to be sure. In short, he would live in an unsure state which is pleasant, than landing in surety which is surely unpleasant.

As it turned out however, Madhyam’s stubbornness with the status quo failed; his resistance fell like the struggling batsman seeing the twilight of his inning with the striking force of the January end Auckland turf powered by a brutal Yorker of Shane Bond. Under the influence of the festivities which became active during his brother’s marriage, he chose to give shape to the melting of emotions. “Nothing is worse in life than a ‘No’. ‘No’ signifies a defeat. To be able to uphold a positive spirit after a ‘No’ is not I have learnt in my life”. Madhyam accidentally sent this text to her, while he was in his thoughts. So deep, that he was unable to breathe the fresh air of the sight presented outside the bus. He thought, his timing has been severely inappropriate in his life. Like the one this time when he should have enjoyed the nature’s panorama outside, he was in the brink of his layering and confusing state of mind.

“Correctly said” a reply came from Ajori. The reply flashed his mind back to the ground. And the ground reality is, he was with Ajori travelling on the same bus. “So near yet so far is no myth”, he replied to her.

Again, as he was expecting a reply, it did not come. It explains an austere verity of his story with her. Ajori will appear in his life, in irregular intervals and for a very brief moment. She will appear when he does not expect her to show up. Conversely, if he hopes for a chance encounter, she will never meet him. Like the messages, coming in bits and without any purpose or substance which can add or adjoin the moments to make it meaningful. The journey that he expects out of many meaningful encounters were never there, but there have been pursuits which results in endless roads, without directions.

Madhyam got back to his thoughts.

“You live in a fool’s paradise”, she replied when Madhyam popped his question up, once again. This time he thought it was for final. Her answer did not make him upset, but the way she answered him was enough to shake his world. He thought that was the end. That was the end of a story which had nothing but nothingness. Madhyam was however terribly wrong. His love for Ajori never came to an end. Over the years, it kept growing. But he could control his manifestations. He tried to keep things under the carpet. Loving her when she would not; Living her when she was not. That was his way of life.

The bus halted for Lunch break. The usual 40-45 minutes break that these buses that ply between Jorhat and Guwahati.

Madhyam and Ajori got off the bus at Amoni for the lunch break. While Ajori was still in her sleep, Madhyam was in his dream despite the fact that he was awake. It goes without mention that, given an opportunity, both would prefer a better place to mingle; forget lunch. But out of Hobson’s choice, they had to resign to the ambience of the food joint or the dhaba.

Amoni is a small place, nearby the district of Nagaon. The place is popular for scattered places where people travelling to either direction alongside the NH 37, stop for breaks; lunch or otherwise. It does not provide best in class ambience; it is a common sight of a market full of those food-joints or small provision stores. For a juvenile soul, it will be worthwhile to smoke or to have a paan; to release the fatigue in front of the lazy paanwala, who would say, ‘Bondhu, did you watch Zubin’s last performance, he is less a singer and more of a drunk!!’

In front of the motel where Madhyam and Ajori went for their lunch, there is a fuel station newly opened. A couple of bikers went to fuel up their bike-tanks. Those were unmanned, not by design though. The attendants were sleeping inside the office, which is how the voice of the enraged bikers were heard, in an effort to bring those back to duty. Madhyam and Ajori showed the similar level of slothfulness for going down to lunch.

The incessant cry of the children, the parents of whom had a hard time controlling and intervening their desires, Madhyam lost his panache for a good time with Ajori already. He did not fell the desire to find another suitable place to sit. After he saw that Ajori has found a place, amidst the crowd to sit, he just followed suit. She was ordering food to the waiters; he approached her and retorted, “Don’t eat”.

“Excuse me”, Ajori snapped.

“I mean to say, I have brought home cooked food, please don’t order”, Madhyam gathered fortitude to make the proposition.

Madhyam could not determine whether the home cooked food or the way he approached her to eat with him made her smile. But he could find a way to come out of the perplexity; he just sat down and took the Tiffin box open. Well, a breakfast with Tiffany was replaced by a luncheon at Amoni. Life can be very cruel. It gives you everything you want, but not always the way you want it.

Ajori admired the way the food was being packed. Seven chapattis packed in an aluminum foil, with three different kinds of aachars in three different aluminum foils; daal and aloo matar ki sabzi.

“Did Pehi packed all these for you?” she could not help asking Madhyam, while saying this she gave her trademark smile a much needed direction and potential. Madhyam was constantly looking at her; her each word was like the rain drops on the mirror of a window, falling down slowly, making the vision of the outside impaired for a while; the smile as adorable as the sunrise on a tempest; enough for Madhyam to overlook the ambience he cared so much about a while ago.

“Perhaps”, Madhyam eluded himself, “Pehi knows that I always have a company with me, with whom I might share food”. Humor does not go well with him; he appreciates that. But he thought there was no harm in trying. He wanted to snap a bite and nosh, by himself. He was aware that was a luxury, he could hardly afford. In stead, he started eating. And looked at her while she was having her lunch. Every time when they meet, they enter this no man’s land; where they act like strangers; as if they have forgot how to communicate; silence seems to prevail all the way.

“The food is good”, Ajori exclaimed while looking at his face with a surmise; as if she wanted to tell him something else and talked about the food.

“The shirt looks good on you”, he said elatedly as if he had discovered something interesting. She was wearing dark red shirt. While seeing her nodding her head in the direction of South and North, he asked her, “You say your favorite color is green, I haven’t seen you wearing one.”, after a pose, “ I of course understand, that I have met you after a gap of 2 years, so apparently your taste might have changed. Right?” Madhyam tried to bring a depth to the otherwise lackluster conversation. Before she could reply, he asked her again, “How about special chai of Amoni?”

She smiled again. She knew Madhyam had this creepy habit of having chai, regardless of time and place. She nodded again.

“Hahahaha”, she continued, “I can never forget your style of having coffee at Kamla Nagar”, and she could hardly stop laughing, “Your bravado of sipping hot coffee with a straw and “, she tried to control her breath and continued, “And your face after that, was unforgettable for me”.

That was an incident 3 years ago. Madhyam was thrilled to discover a sense of nostalgia within her; suggestive of paraphernalia they secretly pursue. It again speaks of a contrast between the two; this was one of those incidents which Madhyam almost religiously annihilated, while she treasured it to her heart. He thought it would have been nice, two list of such thing could be compiled; one comprising of things which Madhyam kept in memory, Ajori shrugged off; and one list with the vice versa. Perhaps there will not be a third list between them, in which there are things which both treasured with equal compassion.

By now, both had finished having food and waited for the special chai Ajori ordered. Both knew that this was the only occasion during the journey; they had talked and spent some time. Madhyam never thought she would have ordered chai for herself, as she was mostly a kind of cold coffee/lime juice type girl as he had so far known her.

“When have you developed this chai habit?”

“Ask me why I have developed this!”, while saying that she kept a close eye on the bus to check if it was there, “I will blame it on the surroundings; while preparing for the semester-end exams, to prevent myself from falling down to sleep or more so when I noticed other girls in the hostel taking the much needed refuge in the aroma of the chai, I also fell pray to it.”, while explaining this she forbore a hasty mood swing on her face, “ Histrionics, you know, I no longer found here in Guwahati; these are people of your community in the hostel, but I could never be closer to anyone . I miss days in Delhi so much”.

Madhyam was also surprised by the fact that Ajori cut short her stay in Delhi. The initial plan was that she would pursue a Management course as Masters. She in fact made the necessary preparations for the entrance and she was selected in some good institutes as well. Till this point Madhyam and Ajori had regular interactions; after that the tie suddenly loosened. Madhyam however never tried to elicit the reason for such a descend in their relationship graph. But he was sure, they both let go of the much needed adhesive to a strong relationship dispersed in infinite directions. In no time, they were strangers again.

“Why have you come back to Guwahati?” the words came out from Madhyam, though he never intended so.

“Forget it now”, she replied, “Finish your chai, the bus is about to leave”.

“Take this please”, Madhyam offered her a Dairy Milk chocolate. He knew, she loved chocolate, in fact it was her constant companion during travel and otherwise also.

The bus will resume its journey; so will life. Madhyam and Ajori had become just like passengers on a journey called life. They had their share of quality moments when time intended to. They passed their lives, some times being aloof of each other and sometimes with greater awareness.

“So, how do you plan to celebrate your birthday?” Ajori asked him. This is one occasion; they have always talked to each other, even though it was for a minute. Ajori had never forgotten to wish him on his birthday, ever since she became cognizant of the day.

Madhyam thought, this is one of the things of the third list he was contemplating about. “Well, I will for sure wait to here from you”, Madhyam passed it while crossing the aisle to take his seat in the bus.

Ajori gave her trademark smile; and Madhyam collected it in his memory; he knew, this will definitely glue him into her memories; for better or for worse.

No sooner had he took his seat, he received a message from her, “Happy rest of the journey”.
